HOW ARE DESIRES FORMED : RELATION BETWEEN SENSES, MIND AND INTELLECT

Before understanding How desires are formed ? Lets understand the desire.

What is a desire ?

Desire is a strong feeling to get something which you really like. Desire can be of anything like of an object, person, place or certain outcome or results. In a subtle meaning, Desires are generally a way of providing pleasures to brain through the release of different neurochemicals.

How are desires formed ?

See, The whole formation of desires occurs from the correlation between senses, mind and intellect. As in bhagavat gita, a holy book of hindus, it is mentioned that senses, mind and intellect are breeding ground of desires.

What is the process of desire formation ?

We all have five sense organs in our body and a highest modified system called brain. In the brain, we consist an intellect. Intellect is the capacity of brain to distinguish between the right and wrong or good and bad.

Now listen carefully,

The five sense organs in our body carry different kinds of sensations from an external factor to our brain. Our brain receives those sensations through the sensory nerves. In the brain those certain sensations are recognized as certain experiences or feelings. Here, the experiences are the emotions. Now, when the brain generates such experiences or feelings, our intellect quickly judges the experiences or distinguish them into good and bad.

Now remember, those experiences also help in generating pleasures in the mind and may not too. In scientific terms, dopamine is the neurochemical that releases during different experiences and helps our mind feel pleasures. Those experiences which generate pleasures in our mind are categorized as good experiences or feelings and those experiences or feelings which do not generates any pleasures are categorized as bad experience by our intellect.  Now here all those experiences or feeling which generate pleasures are termed as desires and all those bad experiences are termed as undesirable. Since, those good experiences helps in releasing dopamine, the mind wants to reexperience those sensations which is the reason your desires slowly turn into addiction. So, you can say desires are one of the part of addictions.

Are you confused ?

No problem. Lets understand by an example. If you see, An alcoholic  has a lust for alcohol. When the alcoholic drinks the alcohol, he receives all the sensation from his/her tongue which is a sense organ and the sensations are carried to our brain through sensory nerves. The brain receives those sensations and generate some experiences or feelings. Those experiences help to release dopamine in brain and feel pleasures. So here the intellect recognizes those experiences as good and forms the desire of alcohol for an alcoholic.

Why alcohol is a desire for the alcoholic only not others ?

So simple, This is because others have not experienced those sensations till now. The mind and intellect is unknown to that sensation so, there is no chance for the formation of desire of alcohol. If someone will try alcohol for first time, then he/she will also receive those sensations, turn them into experience and their intellect will decide whether it is good or bad. So, if his/her intellect decides that it is a good experience then there is a high possibility that it may turn into a desire but if the intellect decides it as a bad experience then there is very less possibility that it may turn into a desire.

Same way, Bitter gourd is favourite vegetable for someone and for someone it is the worst. Here's also the same. Their intellect judges the same experience into two different ways: good and bad. For the good experiencer, it becomes like a desire and but for the bad experiencer it becomes an undesirable one.

In Conclusion

Everyone has a same mind by birth but the intellect is not formed by birth. Development of intellect depends upon various factors like the environment around, the type of knowledge or information he/she acquires etc. This is the reason why a same experience is distinguished as good or bad by two different intellect because the intellect is formed in different ways. See, everyone's mind in the whole universe experience all the things in the same way but all their intellect differentiate a same experience and for someone something becomes a desire but for someone it becomes the undesirable.

THANK YOU
